Japanese Grammar: Expressing Giving and Receiving 「あげる」「くれる」「もらう」
Before starting the exercise for expressing giving and receiving 「あげる」「くれる」「もらう」, please clarify any doubts you may have about the grammatical rules by referring to your grammar guidebook or dictionary. The Instantaneous Composition Method requires you to compose sentences with the target sentence pattern(s) over and over in order to use them almost effortlessly. Instantaneous Composition Exercise for Expressing Giving and Receiving 「あげる」「くれる」「もらう」
This is not a translation exercise. This is the Instantaneous Composition Exercise. As if a reflexive action, try to create an equivalent Japanese sentence shortly after reading an English script. Try not to think for more than three seconds.
(I will) repair the watch (for you). (lit. I will give you the favor of repairing the watch.)
時計を直してあげます。
(My) boyfriend gave a present (to me).
彼氏がプレゼントをくれました。
(My) friend repaired the watch (for me). (lit. My friend gave me the favor of repairing the watch.)
友達が時計を直してくれました。
(My) teacher (will) give a pencil (to me).
先生が鉛筆をくれます。
(My) mother (will) lend the book (to me). (lit. My mother will give me the favor of lending the book.)
お母さんが本を貸してくれます。
(I) received a present from (my) friend.
友達からプレゼントをもらいました。
(I) got a letter written by Shimizu-san.
清水さんに手紙を書いてもらいました。
(I will) receive a picture from Abe-san.
阿部さんから絵をもらいます。
(I will) have a photo taken by (my) friend.
友達に写真をとってもらいます。
Note
「...てあげます」 may sound rude, like giving something from a superior person to an inferior person. When you are in formal situations or need to be polite, it is better that you use the expression of making offers; 「...ましょうか？」instead of 「あげる」.
