Title: Let’s Brush Our Gums with Salt Personality: Honda Mitsuko & Shige Shōgo
Honda: So for brushing teeth, um, I think you all do your own scheme, but the gums, what about the gums?

Shige: Uh-huh.

Honda: Uh-huh. Do you pay attention to periodontitis?

Shige: I do!

Honda: This, well…suggestion,

Shige: Yes.

Honda: it is not from a dentist’s point of view,

Shige: Yes.

Honda: but, well, I am saying this with that feeling, like “for our health let’s brush our gums together with our teeth”.

Shige: Uh-huh.

Honda: So, you know, for gums, ah, when brushing your teeth, there are either pace…I mean pastes, or dental rinses, other things like…

Shige: There are.

Honda: Toothpaste and various other things I think. For the gums, in order to make them squeaky*3 clean, it’s easy. In the bathroom,

Shige: Yes.

Honda: Set up some salt, and with this brush well with your finger.

Shige: Uh-huh.

Honda: Still, I think that sort of thing is good, for the gums. It’s not just brushing the teeth; there are gums too, so let’s brush them together.

Shige: Yes. For brushing, indeed.

Notes: Japanese Grammar and Vocabulary

1. In spoken Japanese, the word order is often changed. If we plainly expressed the sentence 「それぞれのみなさん工く夫ふうされて」, it would look like 「みなさんそれぞれの工く夫ふう(を)されて」.

2. With the phrase 「なさってる」, 「い」 is omitted and hence the correct phrase is 「なさっている」. This is an honorific expression equivalent to 「している」.

3. 「キュッと」 is a Japanese onomatopoeia. The concept comes from the sounds made when something is tied tightly or a glass or dish is wiped dry, and it is used in this way; 「キュッとしたウエスト」 “a slender waist”.
