How to talk about the weather in Japanese

Welcome to the next video and article series with tutor Naomi! In this video and article we will explain how to talk about the weather in simple Japanese.

[How to describe the weather]

First of all, let’s go through some of the main vocabulary you will need to describe the weather in Japanese:
天気 Weather
晴れ(はれ) Sunny, clear weather
曇り(くもり) Cloudy
雨(あめ) Rain
雪(ゆき) Snow
Now, if you were to ask someone what the weather is like you could use either of the following sentences:
今日きょう天気てんきはなんですか?
What’s the weather like today?
今日きょう天気てんきはどうですか?
How’s the weather today?
今日きょう” means today, “なん” is “what”, and “どう” is “how”. If you’re just having a casual conversation with your friends, you can omit the “ですか” at the end, but please note that the “なん” in the previous sentence changes to “なに” in this case.
今日きょう天気てんきは何?
今日きょう天気てんきはどう?
You can also just say “今日きょう天気てんきは?” in which case you have to go up in your voice at the end of the sentence to make sure the person you’re talking to understands you’re asking a question. When you want to reply to these questions, you can use the sentence structure “今日きょう天気てんきは~です”, and just replace “~” with any of the words you learned above.
今日きょう天気てんきれです。
The weather is sunny today.
今日きょう天気てんきあめです。
It’s rainy today.
今日きょう天気てんきくもりです。
It’s cloudy today.
And so on! If you want to make it shorter, you can just say “今日きょうは~です”:
今日きょうれです。
今日きょうあめです。
And so on. If you want to be more casual with your friends, you can say “だ” instead of “です”: 今日きょうゆきだ! It’s snowy! That’s it for today. If you have any questions, you can always clear them up by booking a lesson with one of our native Japanese tutors. See you next time!
