How to talk about the weather in Japanese
Welcome to the next video and article series with tutor Naomi! In this video and article we will explain how to talk about the weather in simple Japanese.
[How to describe the weather]
First of all, let’s go through some of the main vocabulary you will need to describe the weather in Japanese:
天気 |
Weather |
晴れ(はれ) |
Sunny, clear weather |
曇り(くもり) |
Cloudy |
雨(あめ) |
Rain |
雪(ゆき) |
Snow |
Now, if you were to ask someone what the weather is like you could use either of the following sentences:
今日の天気はなんですか? |
What’s the weather like today? |
今日の天気はどうですか? |
How’s the weather today? |
“今日” means today, “なん” is “what”, and “どう” is “how”. If you’re just having a casual conversation with your friends, you can omit the “ですか” at the end, but please note that the “なん” in the previous sentence changes to “なに” in this case.
今日の天気は何? |
今日の天気はどう? |
You can also just say “今日の天気は?” in which case you have to go up in your voice at the end of the sentence to make sure the person you’re talking to understands you’re asking a question.
When you want to reply to these questions, you can use the sentence structure “今日の天気は~です”, and just replace “~” with any of the words you learned above.
今日の天気は晴れです。 |
The weather is sunny today. |
今日の天気は雨です。 |
It’s rainy today. |
今日の天気は曇りです。 |
It’s cloudy today. |
And so on! If you want to make it shorter, you can just say “今日は~です”:
今日は晴れです。
|
今日は雨です。
|
And so on. If you want to be more casual with your friends, you can say “だ” instead of “です”:
今日は雪だ!
It’s snowy!
That’s it for today. If you have any questions, you can always clear them up by booking a lesson with one of our native Japanese tutors. See you next time!
