「私は約束を守ります。私を３日間だけ自由にしてください。妹が私を待っています。代わりに、セリヌンティウスという大切な友達をお城に置いていきます。もし私が帰って来なかったら、私の代わりにセリヌンティウスを殺してください。」王様は笑いました。嘘だ。メロスは帰って来ない。それなら、３日後にセリヌンティウスを殺してしまおう。王様は言いました。「わかった。セリヌンティウスを呼びなさい。メロス、３日目の夕方までに帰って来なさい。もし遅れたらセリヌンティウスを殺す。」友達のセリヌンティウスは、夜遅くにお城に呼ばれました。メロスは王様との約束を説明しました。セリヌンティウスは何も言いませんでした。メロスはお城を出ました。夏の夜の空には、たくさんの星が光っていました。
English Translation
“I will keep my promise. Please let me free for just three days. My younger sister is waiting for me. Instead, I will leave my dear friend Selinuntius in the castle. If I don’t come back, please kill Selinuntius instead of me.” The king laughed. [The king thought] “That’s a lie. Melos won’t come back. In that case, I will kill Selinuntius three days later.” The king said, “All right. Call Selinuntius. Melos, come back by evening on the third day. If you are late, I will kill Selinuntius.” The friend, Selinuntius, was called into the castle late at night. Melos explained his promise to the king. Selinuntius didn’t say anything. Melos left the castle. In the summer night sky, a lot of stars shined.
