「メロスさん。」誰だれかがメロスに話はなしかけました。「誰だれだ？」メロスは走はしりながら聞ききました。「フィロストラトスです。セリヌンティウスの友達ともだちです。走はしるのをやめて下ください。もう間まに合あいません。セリヌンティウスを助たすけることはできません。」「まだ間まに合あう。」メロスは太陽たいようを見みながら答こたえました。「やめて下ください。走はしるのをやめて下ください。今いまはあなたの命いのちが大だい事じです。セリヌンティウスはメロスさんを信しんじていました。王様おうさまにメロスは来きますと答こたえていました。」 「だから、走はしるのだ。信しんじられているから走はしるのだ。」メロスは走はしりました。メロスは何なにも考かんがえずに走はしり続つづけました。

English Translation

“Melos,” someone spoke to Melos. “Who’s there?” Melos asked while running. “My name is Philostratus. I’m Selinuntius’s friend. Please stop running. You will already not be in time. You cannot save Selinuntius.” “I will still be in time,” Melos replied while looking at the sun. “Please stop. Please stop running. Now, your life is important. Selinuntius trusted you. He was responding to the king[‘s question], telling him that you would come.” “That’s why I will run. I will run because I’m trusted.” Melos ran. Melos continued running without thinking anything.
